European Shipyard Week 2006 27th - 31st March 2006

Shipyard WeekFrom 27 to 31 March 2006 the Community of European Shipyards’ Associations (CESA) and the European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) jointly organized the first European Shipyard Week within the context of the European Social Dialogue Committee on Shipbuilding and Ship Repair. During this week targeted campaigns took place in 10 different EU member states preceded by a Social Partner Conference on 22 March in Brussels.

The objective of the event was to reinforce and spread the message of LeaderSHIP 2015, to improve the attractiveness of shipyards as a workplace for young graduates and highly-skilled people and portray the right image of the sector. By addressing the challenges arising from the impending shortage of qualified people and an ageing workforce the social partners wanted to contribute to ensuring productivity, innovation, competitiveness and employment for the sector in the future.

The event was officially launched by a high-profile Social Partner Conference at the European Parliament with social partners from major European shipyards, representatives from the maritime regions, national government representatives, representatives from the European Commission and leading Members of the European Parliament. Facilitated by a centrally organised campaign*, the social partners from shipyards and companies in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom simultaneously organised more than 50 promotional activities and events during this European-wide action week.

We are pleased to present the outcome of this campaign which clearly shows that the events met with great success and thus marked another step to communicate a positive and attractive image of the shipbuilding industry to career seekers, schools and universities, but also to the general public and policymakers. We would also like to thank the European Commission and the European Parliament for their financial and political support for this important event.
